Timber Frames
About
Rusty Leaver's fascination with barns and ranches goes back 40 years. At age 19, Rusty purchased Deep Hollow Ranch, America's oldest cattle ranch, est. 1658, in Montauk, NY. Rusty and his wife have continued the over 300 year old traditions of the ranch, while over the years preserving much of the original ranchlands.
Their attraction to construction began years ago when they moved and restored an 1800's farmhouse. A number of years later, they built their next famiy home and wanted it to feel like it had always been a part of the ranch. With the help of a few Amish friends, they located and purchased a few old barns in the Lancaster, PA area, took them down, shipped them to Montauk and began the process of building a modified timber frame home. They used antique barn siding for the ceiling paneling, re-sawn heart pine flooring from a soap factory in Maryland, while sturdy oak timbers provided the girders, joists, rafters and posts to create much of the frame of the house. Portions of the home employed conventional framing, creating an easier path for electrical, plumbing, heating and insulation. The result was a stunning hybrid home and the design and construction process created an obsession that became a business. TimberForms now builds homes and supplies timber frames for projects all over the country.
Working with his son, Gardner, first class craftsmen, architects and builders that care as much for detail and design as he does, Rusty brings a unique perspective to timber framing. While you'll still find Rusty on a horse, most likely you can find him roaming through the hills of Pennsylvania with his Amish partners, looking for old barns for future projects.
